We are going to change the series of ideas taken up by Adler in his book: THE SIX GREAT IDEAS.
We will replace the idea of BEAUTY with the idea of BEING, and we will move it from the position of being the third idea considered, to the position of being first. There are two reasons for this reordering, and altering the ideas to be considered. First of all, due to the profound subjectivity of the concept of BEAUTY, it is very difficult to deal with the objective aspect of BEAUTY. Secondly, there is a logical priority of the concept of BEING, over the concepts of both TRUTH, and Goodness.
Let me address this second reason in greater detail. The students should ask themselves if they can understand a logical priority among the words: SEE. . . WANT (LOVE). . .IS? Upon reflection, it seems obvious that something must exist before it ca n be known or seen, and it must, to some extent, be known, before it can be desired or loved. If this is true, then we can state this same reflection by saying that the ideas of BEING, TRUTH, AND GOODNESS are ordered among themselves. BEING is prior to TRUTH, and TRUTH is PRIOR to GOODNESS.
