Phoenix College advances over Shawnee in Game 16 of Division II Softball Championship

The Phoenix College Lady Bears took one step closer to defending their title by defeating Shawnee College (IL) 6-0 this morning in the 2001 NJCAA Division II Women’s Softball Championship Tournament in Phoenix.
Jaimie Godin followed Susan Aguilar’s strong pitching performance last night with a gem of her own, tossing a complete-game shutout over the Lady Saints.
PC next takes on Kankakee (IL) Community College for the right to play Lansing (MI) in the championship game.

GAME 17

Phoenix College defeats Kankakee in 7-6 thriller; returns to title game in rematch from last year

This year’s championship game looks a lot like last year’s, with Phoenix College taking on Lansing (IL) Community College for the national title. The only difference is this time it’s PC trying to win it all from the loser’s bracket and #1 Lansing in the cat bird seat.
The Lady Bears returned from deficits of 3-0 and 6-2 to beat Kankakee in the last inning on a game-winning RBI single by pinch-hitter Lisa Coughlin. Jaimie Godin picked up her 2nd consecutive win of the day. PC fought it’s way back from an opening loss Thursday night, winning four straight since. Lansing has won it’s three games in convincing fashion. PC will have to take two games from the Stars to claim a second national crown.

GAME 18--Semifinal

Phoenix College defeats Lansing in Game 18; one more for all the marbles

Phoenix College beat Lansing (MI) College 3-1 before a raucous home crowd in the semifinal game of the NJCAA Division II Softball Championships in Phoenix.

Pitcher Susan Aguilar held the powerful Lansing hitters to just one run, and PC found just enough offense for the win.. PC has now won five straight games after an opening loss, including three games back to back today. The Bears benefited from a cloudy day which kept the sun at bay, and also from an enthusiastic home crowd that visibly bolstered the team physically and mentally.

Lansing needs just one win in the two games for the title, but it’s the Bears who seem to have the psychological edge now. The Stars had not been seriously challenged in their previous games, but the Bears seem to be gaining momentum with each inning on this grueling day.

The championship game begins at approximately 4p.m. today.

GAME 19 - The Championship

Phoenix College Repeats as National Champion!

Against very long odds, Phoenix College came from the losers’ bracket to win their second consecutive Division II national softball title. They did so by beating top-ranked Lansing (MI) Community College in back-to-back games, winning the decisive game 5-3.

Tournament MVP Joy Hull connected for two home runs to power the Bears past the Stars, whose usually dangerous bats were quieted by strong pitching from Jaimie Godin. Godin held Lansing to one run until the bottom of the sixth, when the Stars scored two runs to get back in the picture.

The road to the repeat was a long one for the Bears, who lost their opening game to Kankakee on Thursday. But they used stingy pitching and timely hitting to win two games Friday and four today, beginning at 9a.m. The cloudy day helped to keep the team from feeling the effects of the continuous play. But an even greater factor was the vocal support of the home crowd, plus a contingent of players from other teams who adopted the scrappy PC squad and cheered them non-stop for hours.

In addition to Hull, other PC players named to the All-Tournament Team included Jaimie Godin, Kim Stoffers, and Katie Cobos. Lansing honorees were Jennifer Olds and Nikki Pierpoint. Phoenix College’s Heinz Mueller was voted the tournament’s Outstanding Coach.
