Phoenix College Repeats as National Champion!Against very long odds, Phoenix College came from the losers’ bracket to win their second consecutive Division II national softball title. They did so by beating top-ranked Lansing (MI) Community College in back-to-back games, winning the decisive game 5-3. Tournament MVP Joy Hull connected for two home runs to power the Bears past the Stars, whose usually dangerous bats were quieted by strong pitching from Jaimie Godin. Godin held Lansing to one run until the bottom of the sixth, when the Stars scored two runs to get back in the picture. The road to the repeat was a long one for the Bears, who lost their opening game to Kankakee on Thursday. But they used stingy pitching and timely hitting to win two games Friday and four today, beginning at 9a.m. The cloudy day helped to keep the team from feeling the effects of the continuous play. But an even greater factor was the vocal support of the home crowd, plus a contingent of players from other teams who adopted the scrappy PC squad and cheered them non-stop for hours. In addition to Hull, other PC players named to the All-Tournament Team included Jaimie Godin, Kim Stoffers, and Katie Cobos. Lansing honorees were Jennifer Olds and Nikki Pierpoint. Phoenix College’s Heinz Mueller was voted the tournament’s Outstanding Coach. CyberSports for Baseball - Game SummaryDate: 05/19/2001 Time: 16:59 Site:
