ATTENDANCE

Attendance = Success! Reading courses involve active learning; if you are absent, you miss the opportunity to learn!  If you are concerned about your grade, then plan to attend very class period, arrive on time, and complete all assignments to the best of your ability. Save absences for true emergencies! Arriving to class late or leaving early also affects your attendance.  Please be aware that your homework will be marked late, you may miss a quick quiz at the beginning of class or not receive handouts and instructions for the next class period.  IMPORTANT:  After 4 absences, a student will be withdrawn if there has been no contact with the instructor. After 4 absences, students who wish to continue in the class will be asked to meet with me in my office. Absences also have a direct effect on your grade!

HELPFUL HINTS

ü      Buddy System: It is strongly recommended that you establish a buddy system with at least one other student enrolled in this course.  It is the student’s responsibility to obtain handouts and other information missed during an absence.

ü      Your success in this course may be determined by the following:

·         Competency of skills

·         Active participation!

·         Strong desire to learn and succeed!

·         Communicate with your instructor!

·         Withdraw by December 3rd  to avoid an “F”

ü      Turn in all work, clearly labeled [Name, Due Date, Full Title of Assignment]

ü      You are required to purchase the textbook for this course. Be aware that used books may have writing and missing pages that will interfere with you completing the assigned work. You will be asked to write in the book as well as tear out pages to turn in.

ü      You may visit my office and review your grade at any time throughout the semester.

ü      Recreational reading about many subjects will help you become a better reader!

ü      Extra credit is provided throughout the semester – do not depend on it to “save you!”

These are considered first: extra learning opportunities and second: a way to make up points for occasional absences or a poor score on an assignment or quiz.

CLASS ENVIRONMENT

All students have the right to an environment conducive to learning … please take this into consideration! [I.e. watch tardiness, turn off pagers & phones, and avoid unnecessary side conversations and distractions] The policies governing student behavior may be found in the Phoenix College Student Handbook for your reference.

For Special Accommodations and Support Services, call: Disability Support Services @ 285-7477.
