¨       How to Read a Paragraph By Richard Paul and Linda Elder

¨       Dictionary

MATERIALS

Paper, pen/pencils, index cards, highlighter pens, folder, post it notes, 3-ring binder/dividers

Lecture, skills practice, oral reading, class discussions, group activities, use of library and computers

 

EVALUATION  [50% writing]                                 GRADING SCALE

Class Activities……..25%                                             A = 90 -100 %

Homework …………25%                                             B = 80 - 89 %

Quizzes/Portfolio ….25%                                               C = 70 - 79 %

ATTENDANCE

Attendance is essential if you intend to be successful in this course.  Reading courses involve active learning; if you are absent, you miss the opportunity to learn!  If you are concerned about your grade, then plan to attend very class period, arrive on time, and complete all assignments to the best of your ability. Plan accordingly in case of emergencies!

*IMPORTANT NOTE:  After 4 absences, the instructor will withdraw a student if there has been no contact with the instructor.  Absences also have a direct effect on your grade!

 

 

ASSIGNMENTS

*CRE 101 is a university transfer level/credit course.   Students should set personal learning goals for this course. Write down the grade you would like to earn and be prepared to work for it.  Review your goals every two weeks. 2 class days late and 1 grade lower

NO late crosswords

Some assignments are not collected but are required for class discussions & activities.

NO make up

Make arrangements to take quizzes early and in my office.

      Must be typed

Within 1 week only

HELPFUL HINTS

ü      Buddy System: It is strongly recommended that you establish a buddy system with at least one other student enrolled in this course.  It is the student’s responsibility to obtain handouts and other information missed during an absence. 

ü      Your success in this course may be determined by the following:

        Competency of skills

        Active participation!

        Strong desire to learn and succeed!

        Communicate with your instructor!

        Withdraw by December 3rd to avoid an “F”

ü      Your grade in this course is directly related to all of the above!

You should decide early in the semester what grade you would like to earn and make it a goal!

ü      Turn in all work, clearly labeled [Name, Due Date, Full Title of Assignment]

ü      You may visit my office and review your grade at any time.

ü      Recreational reading about many subjects will help you become a critical reader!

ü      Extra credit is provided throughout the semester BUT do not depend on it to “save you!”
