College To Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month (PHOENIX, Ariz., Oct. 1, 2004) - In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Phoenix College Foreign Languages Department will join forces with student organizations like Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Atzlán (M.E.Ch.A.) and Asociacion Latina Estudiantil (A.L.E.) to offer the following events.
American Latino Redux: The
Therapy Sessions is a satirical look at the state of "multi-Latinoism"
in America. The play lampoons everything from '60s Chicano militants and
their search for Aztlan to the search in suburbia for mainstream acceptance.
The show's odd cast of characters includes a poetry-slam virtuoso, "El
Marrano," Speedy Gonzalez and the ghost of Cesar Chavez. Written
and directed by James E. Garcia. The play is sponsored by Phoenix College
and Valley Hispanic Bomberos.
Nov. 4, 2004 - Free Admission The presentation will focus on Curanderismo: the systematic treatment of disease practiced traditionally among common people, which stresses the use of herbs, natural substances, rituals and prayer. Dr. Eager will also cover the various kinds of lay-healers, medicinal herbs and remedies, psycho-spiritual maladies and folk saints of the borderlands who are considered great curanderos (healers). The three folk saints that will be highlighted are: Teresita Urrea, Don Pedrito Jaramillo, and El Niño Fidencio. All events are free and the public is welcome. ### |
