(PHOENIX, Ariz., Oct. 20, 2003) – On Friday, Oct. 24 the Phoenix College Model United Nations Team will participate in the United Nations Day Flag-Raising Ceremony at Wesley Bolin Plaza, which begins at 10 a.m.

The ceremony, which marks the anniversary of the ratification of the Charter of the United Nations, will include a reading of the governor’s proclamation of United Nations Day in Arizona. United Nations Day Honorary Chairs, Senator Ken Cheuvront and Dr. Grace Caputo, M.D., M.P.H., will also speak about the role of the United States in the United Nations Decade of Literacy.

Senator Ken Cheuvront has a distinguished international career. He has a master of international management degree from Thunderbird American Graduate School of International Management and a BA (Political Science/Public Management) from Claremont McKenna College. Senator Cheuvront studied at the Institut Etudes Europeenes in Nantes, France and at the Universite National de la Cote d’lvoire on a Rotary Scholarship in International Business. He was the Democratic Leader in the Arizona House of Representatives and is now serving as State Senator of District 15. As a legislator, he is actively involved in a vast array of issues including human rights.

Dr. Grace Caputo is the Medical Director of the Arizona Reach Out and Read Coalition, which promotes literacy by providing children with a new, developmentally appropriate book each time they visit their pediatrician’s office. Dr. Caputo is also the Director of the Integrated Phoenix Children’s Hospital/Maricopa Medical Center Pediatric Residency Program. Due to her long record of commitment to education and to the care of under served children, Governor Napolitano appointed Dr. Caputo to various boards and work groups.

After the United Nations Flag-Raising Ceremony, members of the Phoenix College Model United Nations Team will attend a special session at the Arizona State Capitol, where they will be guests of Representative Ken Clark.

The event is sponsored by the United Nations Association of Arizona and Phoenix College Model United Nations. For more information, please call (602) 285-7185.
