Faculty Exchange Sends Business Instructor Down Under to Australia

(PHOENIX, Ariz., Nov. 2, 2004) - From a traditional Australian picnic, which includes nothing less than a full set of china and silverware to a exquisite farewell tea, business instructor, Linda Offenberg experienced the true Australian culture first hand for approximately five weeks during a faculty exchange.

From May 19 through June 25, Offenberg observed classroom settings and instructional techniques at the Riverina Institute of TAFE (RIT) and Charles Sturt University (CSU). Although Offenberg did not engage in direct teaching with the students, she did assist instructors during her observation and presented information about the District and Phoenix College to other instructors.

"One of the most eye-opening experiences was observing and talking with instructors from Charles Sturt University," she said. "This university is a completely ecological and environment-friendly campus. The university is equipped with solar heating and cooling, compost toilets and a complete water reclamation system."

Although Offenberg observed a number of classes and met with many instructors, she also spent a great deal of time with her host families. Whether dolphin-watching or feeding kangaroos, she definitely got a true taste of the Australian culture.

"It was an amazing experience," said Offenberg. "We toured Fraser Island, the largest sand island in the world. It was truly incredible to see and experience the many ecosystems on the island. Whether we were in a rain forest or on a sandy beach, the landscape was nothing less than pure beauty."

Offenberg highly recommends this exchange to fellow faculty members.

"Interacting with the Aussies was by far the most exciting and most enjoyable part of my exchange," added Offenberg. "Everyone was so accommodating and hospitable."

Offenberg's exchange was made possible by the Maricopa Center for Learning and Instruction (mcli). Each year, faculty from across the District can take advantage of one of the International & Intercultural Educational Fellowships in Australia, China or Mexico.

The Australian Faculty Exchange is a unique two-part exchange between the Maricopa Colleges and both the Riverina Institute of TAFE (RIT) and Charles Sturt University (CSU). The exchange program focuses on total immersion into the Australia educational system and the rich culture of Australia through a four-week assignment. In addition to touring and seeing one of their colleges or universities up close, participants will also live with an Australian family and take part in community cultural experiences.
