Study Abroad Program Encourages Students to Protect Great Barrier Reef
(PHOENIX, Ariz., Nov. 10, 2004) Imagine a classroom setting of white sandy beaches, warm breezes and an array of underwater marinescapes. That is exactly what students enrolled in the Phoenix College Study Abroad Program will experience when they travel to Queensland, Australia next summer. Phoenix College will team up
with Australias TAFE Queensland, Whitsunday College to offer students
a unique opportunity to not only study tropical marine biology abroad,
but also to participate in an effort to conserve and protect the Great
Barrier Reef; one of the most highly developed coral systems in the world.
While the class allows students to obtain real-world experience and earn
college credit, students will also make a substantial contribution to
the environment. Whether a full-time biology student or someone just interested in a fantastic summer adventure, this unique opportunity is open to anyone who has the desire to learn about tropical habitats and experience unfamiliar food, culture and surroundings. For approximately two weeks from June 13 to July 2, students will explore the wet tropical forest and the mangroves of Conway National Park, snorkel or scuba dive off beautiful Whitehaven Beach and Blue Pearl Bay in the Whitsunday Islands, observe unique Australian animals, visit the Museum of Tropical Queensland and spend the night at the Reef Headquarters Aquarium in Townsville.
To further the cultural exchange,
students will visit a family owned wildlife center and go on a Crocodile
Safari where they will be introduced to the traditional Aussie Bushman
lifestyle. Students will also meet an Aussie family who is involved in
a Wallaby rescue program. Applications are now being accepted and space is limited. For further information, please call (602) 285-7106 or visit www.phoenixcollege.edu/biology. |
