College Offers New Navajo Language Course for Spring

WHAT:
The Phoenix College Foreign Language Department will offer a new Navajo language course this Spring.

Navajo 101 - Elementary Navajo I will focus on basic grammar, pronunciation and vocabulary of the Navajo language. Students will practice and improve their speaking, reading and writing skills. In addition, the course will include the study of the Navajo culture and students will participate in an off-campus Navajo cultural event.

After completion of the course, students will receive four transferable foreign language credit hours.

WHY:
Phoenix College has offered Navajo conversation classes since 2000. Currently, Phoenix College is the only college within the Maricopa County Community College District to offer Navajo language courses.

The college aspires to be one of the first institutions in the Valley to offer an extensive Navajo language and cultural program, in an effort to meet the increasing demand for Navajo language instructors on the reservations. Today, the college offers four levels of Navajo language courses and instructors are in the process of developing three additional classes.
