(PHOENIX, Ariz., Nov. 14, 2003) - Phoenix College invites the community to come out and enjoy a festive Mexican Posada tradition.

On Thursday, Dec. 11 at 7 p.m. members of the Phoenix College Community will light up the night with illuminating candles to celebrate an ancient-old Mexican Christmas tradition – Las Posadas.

This tradition commemorates the historical journey made by Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of lodging many years ago. Las Posadas is usually celebrated during the nine days that proceed Christmas Day with a candlelight procession and it traditionally ends with food, drink, dance and the breaking of piñatas.

The event, which was organized by Phoenix College student and instructors of Spanish, as well as M.E.Ch.A. and A.L.E. will help promote awareness and understanding of Hispanic culture.

The procession will begin in front of the Phoenix College Auditorium, located at 1202 West Thomas Road. Parking will be available in the west parking lot, located at Thomas Road and 15th Ave for those that wish to attend.

The Phoenix College Las Posadas celebration is free and open to the public. Members of the community are encouraged to come out and enjoy a festive night of caroling, piñatas and refreshments.
