Special Services Department Receives Mayor's Commission on Disability Issues "Employer of the Year" Award

(PHOENIX, Ariz., Nov. 21, 2003) – The Phoenix College Special Services Department was recently honored for its ongoing commitment, consistent contributions and genuine dedication to people with disabilities during the recent City of Phoenix Mayor’s Commission on Disability Issues annual luncheon. The department and its employees were presented with the "Employer of the Year" Award.

This award is given to one Phoenix employer on an annual basis who displays outstanding achievements in the field of disabilities and who makes outstanding contributions to the community involving people with disabilities.

Mitra Mehraban, Director of Special Services accepted the award for the department.

"Our facilities and services stand above other institutions for a variety of reasons," said Mehraban. "Most importantly, Phoenix College has a highly compassionate, caring and well-trained staff who routinely put student needs before all others. In addition, we have made outstanding progress in improving and updating our technological resources during the past seven years and have physically modified our facilities throughout the campus in order to meet the needs of all of our students."

Modified facilities include the gymnasium bathrooms and showers, doors, waiting areas, ramps, dial-a-ride area and the Information Center. In addition, the college recently purchased an ADA van for staff and students to use for off site visits. Of the 10 Maricopa Community Colleges, Phoenix College is the first to offer the highly equipped vehicle to its community.

"We actively hire and train individuals with disabilities, thereby providing quality employment opportunities to this important segment of our population," added Mehraban.

Mehraban also was the recipient of the Women’s Leadership Group "Women of Distinction" award. Also, during 2001 and 2002, she received formal recognition from the City of Phoenix for disability-related services and was recognized by the District Disability Council for writing a successful and beneficial district-wide funding proposal to support services with disabilities.

Phoenix College truly believes in equality for all individuals and strives to give every student the support needed to maximize their chances for all types of success (academic, career and personal).

"Our philosophy is to comply with all relevant regulations and laws at all times while attempting to productively educate within the spirit or the intent of such laws in a manner that ensures success at all times," added Mehraban.
