American Red Cross 'Holiday Heroes' Blood Drive:
Your Opportunity to Be A Hero!

(PHOENIX, Ariz., Nov. 12, 2003)—Holiday season is here, and the American Red Cross needs blood donations now more than ever. You can help by donating blood at the American Red Cross ‘Holiday Heroes’ blood drive sponsored by Phoenix College on Tuesday, Nov. 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Life Lobby (lower level of Hannelly Center) at Phoenix College. With support of students, faculty, staff and community members, the goal of obtaining 70 units of blood (equal to about 100 individual blood donations) will be reached.

Throughout the season, there are more accidents requiring more blood, and less blood donors due to busy schedules. This produces a shortage in the already low blood supply. Also, the American Red Cross needs more blood donations than usual this year due to Southern California’s recent wildfires, resulting in temporary closures of blood donation sites in that area. If that is not enough, here are more reasons to donate blood:

--Each pint of blood donated helps as many as three people.

--In the U.S., a blood transfusion is needed about every two seconds.

--In Arizona, more than 300 blood donors are needed every day.

-- By the time each of us reaches the age of 72, nearly all of us will have used
blood or a blood product and so will most of our family and friends.

Individuals wishing to donate blood can call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE and ask to be scheduled for the Phoenix College blood drive. Walk-in appointments will also be accepted. Typically, donating blood takes about 45 minutes to one hour. Donors must be 18 years or older and weigh at least 110 pounds.

Sponsors of the blood drive include Student Life and Leadership at Phoenix College, the Wellness Committee at Phoenix College and the American Red Cross.

All community members are encouraged to participate in the blood drive. For further information, please contact 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or the Phoenix College Student Life and Leadership Office at (602) 285-7231.
