Dental Scholarships Awarded to Honor Former Instructor

(PHOENIX, Ariz., May 13, 2004)—Over the past year, the Phoenix College Dental Hygiene Program has raised more than $6,000 for a scholarship fund in memory of Denise Lust, a former PC alumnus and faculty member whose life came to a tragic end in 2003. Recently, students, faculty and family members of Lust gathered for the first ever Denise Lust Scholarship recognition ceremony for scholarship winners.

During the ceremony, Lust’s husband, Michael, presented the scholarships along with Debby Kurtz-Weidinger, a faculty member in the Dental Hygiene Program, to the winners. This year’s Denise Lust Scholarship recipients are Kim DeLeon, Fran Tocco, Shaun Walker and Jennifer Rebs, all of whom were students of Lust.

In 2001, Lust graduated from the Dental Hygiene program at Phoenix College at the top of her class. She was immediately hired as adjunct faculty and was highly respected by both the students and dental hygiene faculty. On April 3, 2003, Lust was killed in an automobile accident. Lust is survived by her husband and her two children, ages 11 and 15.

The Dental Hygiene department plans to continue fundraising to contribute to the Denise Lust Scholarship fund. For more information about the Denise Lust Scholarship, please call (602) 285-7752.
