Phoenix College Students Participated in NASA Awareness Day at Estrella
Mountain Community College
by: Christy Skeen
It
was a day full of interaction with NASA astronauts, meteorite specialists,
the Mars Education Director and a NASA engineer from the Johnson Space
Center for a number of math and science students from across the Valley.
Fourteen Phoenix College students
recently received hands-on training and education in a field like no other
by attending NASA Awareness Day at Estrella Mountain Community College.
Thanks to Estrella Mountain
Community Colleges collaboration with NASA, students who are planning
a career in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics received a
unique opportunity, which provided a wealth of information about NASAs
programs and its professionals.
The eventful day had a lineup
of phenomenal guest speakers from the NASA astronaut corps and the Mars
Education project. Students also had an opportunity to take advantage
of visual displays and hands-on activities, which focused on the Mission
to the Moon, Mission to Mars and Space Shuttle Command.
Because Phoenix College is
a Hispanic Serving Institution, funding was made available to send a number
of students to this educational event.
"It was a great opportunity,"
said Danel Quintero, Student Services Specialist. "Our students thoroughly
enjoyed themselves and learned so much in one day. We were extremely grateful
to have this opportunity."
