Cinco de Mayo Celebration – A Hit with Campus Community

by: Christy Skeen

It was a day full of festive music, dancing and great food for the Phoenix College community as they celebrated Cinco de Mayo on Sophomore Square.

The successful event was co-sponsored by student organizations, Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanos de Aztlan (M.E.Ch.A) and Asociacion Latina Estudiantil (A.L.E.). M.E.Ch.A. focuses on the recruitment and retention, and offers a support group for Latino students. The club also promotes an awareness and understanding of the Latino culture in relationship to the total school and community. A.L.E. was formed to unite people from different ethnic Latin groups and to promote Latino/Hispano awareness. The club focuses on learning about different Latin cultures and taking part in community related activities.

In addition to all the wonderful food, Mariachi music and dancing, Sueños Artes had a captivating display of original artwork from Central and South America. Sueños Artes specializes in the import of arts and crafts from primarily Nicaragua, Venezuela and Guatemala.
