(PHOENIX,
Ariz. - March 11, 2005.) The Phoenix College Foreign Language Department
will host the Latin American Film Festival, which will showcase a different
Latin American movie each night of the festival. Following every showing,
the director of each of the films will be present to converse with the
audience. The films will be shown March 29 - April 1, at 7 p.m. each night.
The Latin American Film Festival
is an opportunity for the public to see modern Latin American films depicting
global contemporary issues that not only affect Latin Americans but all
citizens of the world. This event is free and open to the public. Please
note, the content is intended for a mature audience.
Film directors that will be
present throughout the week include: Bernardo Cañizares
from Ecuador, Sonia Fritz from Puerto Rico, Luis Alberto Restrepo
from Colombia, and Maria del Carmen de Lara from Mexico.
March 29
Como Voy a Olvidarte, (How can I forget you), is directed
by Bernardo Cañizares of Ecuador and was released in 2004. This
film transports viewers to the most beautiful Ecuadorian landscapes, where
Aurora is enlightened by the world she previously considered strange.
With the aid of a young journalist, she attempts to show the country the
truth about her father, a leading politician.
March 30
El Beso Que Me Diste, (The Kiss that you gave me), directed
by Sonia Fritz from Puerto Rico, is the 2000 Audience award winner of
the Chicago Latino Film Festival. This movie portrays a star reporter
of Teledigital TV Network, who is determined to find her 8-year old son
after her ex-husband kidnapped him and took him to the United States.
March 31
La Primera Noche, (The First Night), directed by Luis Alberto
Restrepo of Columbia depicts two young peasants forced to move to the
city by the Guerilla conflict violence. This film is a love story that
evolves in the heart of a society torn by war and violence.
April 1
En el Pais de no Pasa Nada, (In the Country Where Nothing Happens),
directed by Maria Del Carmen de Lara of Mexico is a film that converts
infidelity, poverty and kidnapping into a reason to laugh.
