Phoenix
College Anticipates Approximately 300 Local High School Students To Participate
in Foreign Language Competition April 5
by: Christy Skeen
Approximately 300 high school
students throughout the Valley will test their foreign language skills
at the 14th Annual High School Foreign Language Competition at Phoenix
College on Saturday, April 5.
For years, this annual competition
has allowed students to compete in a number of areas including poetry
recital, prose readings, presentation of skits and short stories in both
Spanish and French.
"Without a doubt, being
bilingual is a highly marketable skill these days," said Delia Escalante,
Phoenix College Foreign Language instructor. "As the demand for bilingual
employees increases throughout the Valley and throughout the country,
many high school students are taking advantage of their foreign language
classes to prepare for their future career."
Some of the high schools participating
this year include: Carl Hayden, South Mountain, Barry Goldwater, Bourgade
Catholic, Coronado, Camelback and North High.
Registration will begin at
8:30 a.m. in the Bulpitt Auditorium and the awards ceremony will conclude
at noon.
"This annual competition
encourages local high school students to share their knowledge and put
into practice what theyve learned in their foreign language classes,"
added Escalante. "We are so lucky to have students representing a
number of high schools throughout the Valley. This indicates that there
is a growing interest among local students to learn a new language."
