Family Care Center Receives Generous Donation from Phoenix College Library
Last semester the Library raised $950 during a book sale of old withdrawn library books, donated books and magazines. All of the proceeds benefited the children at the Family Care Center. "We were so surprised and honored that our program would be chosen to benefit from the sale proceeds," said Family Child Care director, Alverta McKenzie. "Books and music are so important to the literacy and language skills of our young children." After the instructors were told that their center was selected to receive the donation, they drew up a "wish list" of books and music cassettes that would enrich the lessons for the students. Musical selections ranged from Children of the World to Hoop Dee Doo (the Wiggles). The book titles were just as interesting: Get Me to the Moon Daddy, Eric Carle; Lookout Kindergarten Here I Come, Nancy Carlson, Osos Polar, Oso Polar Que Es Esse Ruido, Bill Martin, along with many others. Many books and songs in Spanish were added to bring more variety and quality to the center's book and music collection. "The children and teachers are going to be snapping, and tapping and singing all semester long," said McKenzie.
