Nina
Mason Pulliam Scholarship Recipients Announced
By: Christy Skeen
Seven Phoenix College students
were recently accepted into the Nina Mason Pulliam Legacy Scholars program,
which funds 24 credit hours per year and $500 per semester for books and
supplies. The program also includes a $2,500 Living Stipend each year.
These recipients include:
Edna Guerrero, Rebecca Plumer, Aleshia Michels, Ozwaldo Valles, Al MaCaw
Dewakuku, Kevin Ivory and LaTrechia Morrison.
The scholarship program, which
was established in 2001, is dedicated to individuals who would not normally
receive traditional academic scholarships and whose personal commitments
or financial circumstances would preclude them from enrolling without
long term scholarship support. The program can provide financial support
for up to four years, as long as a student is in compliance with the academic
and programmatic requirements of the program.
The Nina Mason Pulliam Legacy
Scholars program provides educational opportunities to adults 25 years
and older with dependents, college-age youth and adults with disabilities
and/or young adults who have been raised in an environment absent of biological
family or in the foster care system.
Nina Mason Pulliam, both a
journalist and businesswoman, was always an avid and true supporter for
the many causes close to her heart. She was the founding secretary-treasure
and a director of Central Newspapers, Inc. which Eugene C. Pulliam established
in 1934. Among its holdings were The Arizona Republic and the Phoenix
Gazette. Upon Pulliams death in 1997, the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable
Trust was established to support people in need, especially women; to
protect animals and nature; and to enrich community life in Phoenix.
The scholarship program is
open to students of the Maricopa Community Colleges and Arizona State
University. Applications are available each year beginning in January.
The application deadline is mid-March each year.
