Ray Suarez to Speak at Phoenix College


WHAT:

Ray Suarez of The NewsHour will kick off the Fall 2005 Maricopa Honors Lecture Series - Popular Culture: Shaping and Reflecting Who We Are on Wednesday,Sept. 21at 7 p.m.

Suarez is the first scheduled guest speaker of the 2005-2006 series. "The Old Subdivision: American Life and American Culture in the First Suburban Century" will be the focus of his lecture.

WHO:

Ray Suarez joined The NewsHour in October 1999 as a Washington-based senior correspondent responsible for conducting newsmaker interviews, studio discussions and debates by reporting from the field and serving as backup anchor.

He also is an essayist for BBC Radio, joining a group of US-based writers on a new program called State of the Union. The weekly commentaries are the successor to the late Alistair Cooke's Letter From America. He has more than 25 years of varied experience in the news business.

He came to The NewsHour from National Public Radio where he had been host of the nationwide, call-in news program Talk of the Nation since 1993. Suarez also wrote, The Old Neighborhood: What We Lost in the Great Suburban Migration and has contributed to several other works including Brooklyn, Saving America's Treasures, Las Christmas: Favorite Latino Authors Share Their Holiday Memories, and About Men.
