More Than 100 Seniors Benefit From The SilverSneakers® Fitness Program on Campus

By: Christy Skeen

The SilverSneakers® Fitness Program, a nationally recognized delivery system of wellness services, is more than 100 members strong at Phoenix College. These members are taking advantage of the newly remodeled fitness center and wellness classes like chair sculpting and pilates to improve their health and overall well-being.

Since 1999, Phoenix College has partnered with HealthCare Dimensions Incorporated (HCD) to offer the SilverSneakers® Fitness Program on its campus. This partnership allows participants access to a number of wellness activities on campus.

According to HCD, the SilverSneakers® Fitness Program is the leading senior exercise program in the United States. The program "is a long term, cost-effective and preventive managed care solution" for a select group of Medicare-eligible members who often suffer from multiple chronic conditions. The SilverSneakers® Fitness Program is designed to increase members’ levels of physical activity. It also encourages members to remain active.

"We really do try to spoil our members," said Carolynn French, program coordinator. "When they sign up, they are not limited to only the chair aerobics classes. When they become SilverSneakers® members, they have access to all aerobics classes and the fitness center. Participants also receive a one-on-one orientation that provides them with a wealth of information about their membership and program."

According to literature on the HCD’s website, "SilverSneakers® participants and their physicians have reported improved balance, improved circulation and easier mobility." The program also "has been proven to help control diabetics’ blood sugar and decrease the pain and discomfort to arthritis sufferers."

A member’s insurance company pays for membership to the program. For more information about the SilverSneakers® Fitness Program or to see if you qualify, call the campus SilverSneakers® advisor, Carolynn French at (602) 285-7646.
