More Than 100 Seniors Benefit From The SilverSneakers® Fitness Program on Campus
By: Christy Skeen
Since 1999, Phoenix College has partnered with HealthCare Dimensions Incorporated (HCD) to offer the SilverSneakers® Fitness Program on its campus. This partnership allows participants access to a number of wellness activities on campus. According to HCD, the SilverSneakers® Fitness Program is the leading senior exercise program in the United States. The program "is a long term, cost-effective and preventive managed care solution" for a select group of Medicare-eligible members who often suffer from multiple chronic conditions. The SilverSneakers® Fitness Program is designed to increase members levels of physical activity. It also encourages members to remain active. According to literature on the HCDs website, "SilverSneakers® participants and their physicians have reported improved balance, improved circulation and easier mobility." The program also "has been proven to help control diabetics blood sugar and decrease the pain and discomfort to arthritis sufferers." Program participants pictured above include: Dolores Abbe, Maxine Ashmore, Stephahia Hamel, Magdulena Illes, June Walker, Judith Volk, Vera Lutz and Estella Robles. |
