Does The Matrix excite you? Are your bookshelves filled with the best of science fiction novels? If so, a new course at Phoenix College entitled Literature of Science Fiction is the journey through space and time that all science fiction lovers crave.

This unique hybrid course will allow students to survey science fiction literature by history and by theme. The class will investigate the origins and definitions of the science fiction genre as well as the similarities and differences between it and other imaginative literatures. The course will also examine various contemporary social, psychological and technological issues such as gender and ethnicity, roles of technology, cyberconsciousness, loss of identity and the nature of existence and sentience.

Students can expect to explore the following authors and texts during this three-credit course.

Isaac Asimov – I, Robot
Alfred Bester – The Demolished Man
Ursula Le Guin – The Left Hand of Darkness
Robert Heinlein – Stranger in a Strange Land
Octavio Butler – Parable of the Sower
Ray Bradbury – Martin Chronicles
Frank Herbert – Dune
Philip Dick – Blade Runner

Popular blockbuster hits like The Matrix, Alien, Terminator, classics such as Time Machine, 2001, Metropolis and Colossus: The Forbin Project, and even science fiction television series will play a role in class discussions.
