Math Instructor Elected Treasurer of National Two-Year College Mathematics Organization

(PHOENIX, Ariz., Jan. 21, 2004) – Phoenix College Mathematics instructor, Tom Adamson was recently elected to serve as the Treasurer of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC).

Adamson took office at the close of the 29th Annual Conference, which was held in Salt Lake City, Utah. Approximately 1,000 faculty, administrators and educational professionals across the country were in attendance.

Founded in 1974, AMATYC is dedicated to the improvement of the teaching and learning of mathematics in the first two years of college. AMATYC addresses the concerns of the 20,000 full- and part-time mathematics faculty who teach at two-year colleges. In North America, more than 1200 community colleges enroll approximately 10.4 million students.

AMATYC’s mission includes the preparation of scientifically and technologically literate citizens and the continuing professional development of mathematics faculty.

Currently Adamson is involved in a Netherlands Exchange Program, which is offered by the Maricopa Community Colleges International and Intercultural Education Office. This program allows instructors to gain additional understanding of a different educational system and how it impacts working with international students. It gives participants, like Adamson an opportunity to develop new perspectives on their professional competencies as well as experience new educational settings. He recently hosted Sisca van Schieveen of ROC Aventus College in the Netherlands. Adamson will continue the second phase of the program when he travels to the Netherlands on May 8. Adamson is also a former Mathematics Department Chair at Phoenix College.
