College Reaches Milestone - Receives first "Truly" ADA-Accessible Van

(PHOENIX, Ariz., Jan. 9, 2004) – After approximately eight years of hard work and dedication, Phoenix College will receive the first "truly" ADA-accessible van. The van is fully equipped with transfer seats, dropped floor capability, left and right hand controls, automatic kneel system, keyless remote control and automatic side-door ramp.

"This is a wonderful accomplishment," said Mitra Mehraban, Director of Special Services at Phoenix College. "Many individuals have devoted a substantial amount of time and effort towards reaching this important goal. This is truly a historical milestone for Phoenix College. Our campus and individuals with disabilities will reap the benefits for many years to come."

The new van, which can be used by college staff, also provides transportation for students with disabilities to many college-related events, including campus tours, university visits and other school-related functions. It will greatly benefit students and staff with restricted mobility conditions, including individuals in wheelchairs.

The added benefit of this new van is its dual-use. Although the van is ADA-accessible, it is not exclusively limited to those individuals with disabilities. Its design was modified to accommodate both people with physical limitations and able bodied persons.

"We should take great pride in this accomplishment and the invaluable benefits that it will generate for all of us," added Mehraban.
