Phoenix College Study Skills Course Helps Students Get The Most Out of Their College Education

By: Christy Skeen

Do you have difficulty studying? Are your note taking skills less than up to par? If so, Phoenix College introduces College Study Skills, a unique course that helps students survive college with a passing grade.

Beginning Feb. 10, students can take advantage of this class, which is designed not only for those students who have difficulty studying, but also for those who wish to improve their study habits. The class will focus on time management, successful note taking, test taking, memory enhancement and writing essays and research papers. The course is also designed to help get students motivated about studying.

Course instructor, Cindy Ortega encourages students to get involved in this course as early as possible.

"It is unfortunate that some students fail to recognize why they are having difficulty with a particular course," said Ortega. "Before they discover why, it’s too late – they drop the course. In reality, many students struggle with classes because they don’t know how to study, take good notes or read and dissect their textbook. This class empowers them to be an effective and efficient student. Once many complete the course, their attitude toward studying changes tremendously."

The class is structured to allow for one-day in the classroom and one-day in the reading lab per week. By incorporating the reading lab, students can focus more on their individual needs. This also allows them to use the Internet as a resource and become familiar with WebCT classes.

"Overall, this class helps students recognize and value their college education," she added. "They begin to discover their own learning style and how to enhance their strengths and improve their weaknesses."
