Story Share Festival Proved To Be A Unique Journey for Attendees
by: Christy Skeen
It
is no secret. Phoenix College is known to embrace and thrive on its unique
culture and diversity.
On a campus where more than 40 different languages are spoken and approximately
1,800 students represent countries other than United States, the college
campus is a central hub for those seeking international and cultural awareness
and/or activities.
Since 1920, Phoenix College has promoted the education and understanding
of all people, nationalities and customs and it is evident that this solid
tradition still holds true today.
Aside from the everyday gestures of compassion and acceptance, Phoenix
College most recently held the International Story Share Festival, a unique
event where cultures came together through the art of oral history.
Audience
members received a true taste of cultures from around the world through
the words of Phoenix College students. This truly fascinating event showcased
11 original stories written by English 107 students who speak English
as their second language. Native languages included Spanish, Persian,
Amehirc, Begali, American Sign Language (ASL) and Arabic, Nuer.
The following stories were selected by students from Reading 91 and presented
by Communications 080 and Communications 120 students.
- Aztec Legend
- The Best Gift When I Was Young
- Florencias Treasure
- The Fox and the Scorpion
- The Kings Day
- Life and Death
- My Mother Told Me a Story
- PopocatePetl and Itztlacihuac
- The Power of Unity
- The Filial Daughter Sim Chung
- The Fancy Girl
"This was a great opportunity for International students,"
said Rey Cruz Gaña, student and the master of ceremony. "It
really boosts your confidence."
