"Jody the Dental Coyote" and "Super Molar" Pay Visit To Family Care Center Preschool Class

by: Christy Skeen

What do you have when you put 20 four year-olds in a room with "Jody the Dental Coyote" and "Super Molar"? Are you curious?

Now, add 12 members of the American Dental Assistants’ Association, plenty of toothbrushes, dental floss and instructional displays. Add them all up and you will have a unique and informational "First Dental Visit."

That’s right! Several preschool students from the Phoenix College Family Care Center recently took advantage of this exciting activity sponsored by the Phoenix College American Dental Assistants’ Association (SADAA).

The event, which began with a light, healthy snack, progressed into a valuable learning experience where children became aware of the importance of proper dental care and routine brushing.

The activity, which consisted of two main presentations: an instructional piece and an equipment demonstration, allowed students an opportunity to become familiar with dental care procedures and routine check-ups in an effort to lessen the fear of a dental visit.

"This event creates an opportunity for the students to plan and participate in community outreach projects," said Rita Perry, SADAA advisor. "This enhances their learning and appreciation for community service as part of their professional responsibility and gives members an opportunity to exhibit some of the communication skills and disease prevention theories that they have learned in their courses this semester. At last, it also should serve as a ‘confidence booster’ for the students to observe their own achievements and prepare them for interaction with patients that they will have in their externships starting in January."
