Department Hosted Dedication Applauding
Faces of the Community
After five years of collaboration
and hard work, the Phoenix College Art Department hosted a special dedication
applauding the completion of one of its most cherished projects: Faces
of the Community, a unique sculpture located in the North Parking
lot at 11th Avenue and Flower.
An idea which grew from a desire to foster community appreciation to attract
the local community to the Phoenix College campus for public art has developed
into an impressive sculpture, which towers more than 10 feet in height.
The completed artwork is truly
relative of the colleges surrounding community. Embedded in the
cement structure viewers will find more than 100 masks, which
represent the faces of the local community. All masks appearing in the
artwork were constructed by local elementary school students, area residents
and Phoenix College faculty, staff and students.
In addition to the dedication,
a small reception followed in the Phoenix College Art Gallery. Viewers
had the opportunity to view and/or purchase art at the Holiday Art Sale.
Contributing artists included:
Phoenix College faculty, staff and students and members of the local community.
Contributing local professional
artists also included:
Mike
Anderson is a Phoenix College alumnus. His steel sculptures
can be viewed
throughout the United States, including downtown Phoenix and Chicagos
Navy Pier.
Zarco Guerrero
is known to many as the community "mask maker." His work can
be
seen in various parts of the world.
Helen Helwig and Niki Glen
are public artists who have both contributed a great deal
to various communities throughout the Phoenix metropolitan area. Their
work can be
seen outside of the Arizona Mills Mall and under the I17 underpass at
Central and 7th
Avenue.
