Art 290 Student Impresses La Universidad Iberoamericana - Noroeste (UIA) Officials

by: Christy Skeen

The unique creative talent and web design skills of Art 290 student, Adolfo Mejia recently caught the attention of La Universidad Iberoamericana - Noroeste (UIA) officials in Tijuana, Baja California.

Thanks to the recommendation of his Art 290 instructor, Dale Doubleday, Mejia has designed an interactive Flash Web presentation to showcase the images and documentation of the school’s new library. This exceptional opportunity has allowed Mejia’s work to be seen all over the world.

A class that began with a concentration on advanced graphic and animation techniques for the Web and Flash Web design and programming has literally turned into an great opportunity for Mejia to showcase his professional work to future employers.

"Having this project to include in my portfolio is great," said Mejia. "After I finish my studies, I want to work on graphic and Web design for a company. Eventually, I would like to own my own business."

Although it took Mejia a few days to consider the project, he embraced it with open arms and finished the bilingual site in only one semester.

"This project has meant a lot to me," said Mejia. "I now have a step ahead. Employers can have an idea of what I can do and what I am capable of when it comes to Web design."

Mejia fell in love with graphic and Web design after experimenting with a few classes. Although he has taken Art 290 twice, he also took advantage of Macromedia Dreamweaver and Flash. He admits that learning HTML is a difficult process and takes time.

"Learning HTML is like learning a whole other language," he admits. "But it can be done!"

Doubleday, who has been teaching computer graphics at Phoenix College for approximately three years, finds Mejia’s work to be overly impressive.

"Adolfo is an extremely talented and motivated designer," said Doubleday. "He has the ability to incorporate programming to design advanced web sites. He design techniques and web skills are at a professional level."

Art 290 is specifically geared to advanced Web design and will be available next semester on Wednesday evenings. For more information on the class, please call (602) 285-7750.
