Southwest Studies Program at Phoenix College Presents
The Changing U.S. & Arizona Demography: Guess Who's Coming to School

(PHOENIX, Ariz., Feb. 10, 2005) - The general U.S. and Arizona population continues to witness unprecedented changes as a result of the growth of the Hispanic population in America. The changing demographic landscape has implications for America's new markets, working groups, retirement communities, and schools. This change will have a significant impact on the future economic, social and political scenarios of our country and state.

At Phoenix College on Feb. 23, Dr. Loui Olivas, Assistant Vice President of Academic affairs at Arizona State University, will examine data relevant to the growing Hispanic influence on educational institutions at all levels across the country. As a result of this profound demographic change, the composition of future school enrollments will be dramatically different from the traditional school population of the past four decades.

Dr. Olivas, a retired colonel from the Arizona Air National Guard, has served as the assistant vice president for academic affairs at Arizona State University (ASU) for the past 14 years. He has been at ASU since 1979 and is a tenured professor in the W.P. Carey School of Business. His teaching and research emphasizes entrepreneurship, small business management and Hispanic demographics - the marketing perspectives.

Dr. Olivas has served on numerous national boards and commissions, some of which include: founding dean of the National Hispanic Corporate Council Institute, president of the American Association for Hispanics in Higher Education, and the director of the U.S./Mexico Solidarity Foundation among others.

For the past 14 years, Dr. Olivas has published the "Annual Survey of Hispanic Owned Businesses in Arizona."

Anyone interested in the growing Hispanic population and the influence it will have on our school districts, small businesses, social security, and a variety of aspects dealing with our future should attend this very relevant presentation.

Dr. Olivas' presentation will take place on February 23, at noon, and again at 7 p.m. in the John Paul Theatre at Phoenix College. Following each presentation, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions pertaining to the various topics addressed.
