Australian Faculty Visit Phoenix College

(PHOENIX, Ariz., Feb. 3, 2005) - From an educational visit to schools on the Navajo Reservation to an informational hike throughout Pueblo Grande, a team of Australian faculty are taking advantage of a collaborative exchange program among the Maricopa Community College District, Charles Sturt University and Riverina Institute of TAFE.

This exchange has introduced two Phoenix College faculty, Dana Fladhammer (Applied Business) and Linda Offenberg (Business) to two of Australia's finest faculty, Jenni Munday of Charles Sturt University and Jennie Edwards of Riverina Institute of TAFE. Fladhammer and Offenberg graciously hosted the two visitors for a portion of their four-week exchange.

Both Munday and Edwards observed classes, attended various meetings, participated in special events and met with other Phoenix College faculty members, while at Phoenix College. This program has allowed faculty from different countries an opportunity to interact with one another, benefiting from the development of new ideas and strategic partnerships and goals.

"This experience has taught me that no matter how small or large an institution may be, we all have similar problems," said Edwards. "I am just thrilled that this opportunity will lead to a new online learning experience for my students. Dana and I are currently working on a project, in which we hope to connect our students through online learning."

This is the first time since Sept. 11, 2001 that either Charles Sturt University or Riverina Institute of TAFE has sent participants to the United States for this exchange. Munday, who took advantage of this program in the past jumped at the opportunity to participate again.

"Each exchange has created such strong connections," added Munday. "Not only do you meet some incredible people at other colleges, but you also meet new instructors from your own university. These are two very strong aspects of the program and the partnerships you create are long-lasting."

Although the four instructors discussed their differences at each college, they each agree that it takes a certain type of person to fully enjoy an experience of this nature. Those traveling and those hosting must enjoy getting involved and be open to new ideas.

"All of us that do this are open to new experiences and value international culture," concluded Fladhammer.

This unique exchange program focuses on total immersion into each educational system and the rich cultures during a four-week assignment. In addition to touring and seeing colleges and universities up close, participants also experience living with a local family and taking part in community cultural activities.
