Phoenix College Family Care & Head Start Center to Host Dedication Ceremony/Celebration

by: Christy Skeen

The Phoenix College Family Care & Head Start Center recently celebrated the installation of its new outdoor play station with a dedication ceremony. This new addition was made possible by a $10,000 grant from the Phoenix Rotary Club 100 Charities.

The outdoor structure is an absolute treat for the children, considering that many live in homeslacking open backyards and playgrounds.

The play station not only serves as a fun, recreational alternative, but it also can be used as a developmental tool. Research supports that performing motor skill activities enhances a child’s brain development. Studies also show that the more physical play a child receives, the more developed their motor skills become.

"Receiving the funds to install this new structure was an absolute delight to our students," exclaimed director of the Family Care & Head Start Center, Alverta McKenzie. "More than half of the families that use our facility meet the U.S. Federal Poverty Guidelines for low income. Therefore, I cannot stress enough how grateful we are. This new structure allows our children many opportunities to engage in the type of play that makes a difference in later learning."

The Phoenix College Family Care & Head Start Center, which serves 78 children ages two to five, is especially designed for the children of college students who are also parents. Parents must be enrolled in a minimum of three credit hours at Phoenix College.

"We are extremely excited to have this new play station," added McKenzie. "This structure, which meets current guidelines of the American Disabilities Act (ADA), offers more safety and accessibility. Overall, it enhances a child’s physical, intellectual, social and emotional development. Young children will benefit from this new play station over the next 20 years."
