Four Phoenix College Students win Creative Writing Awards

by: Christy Skeen

Four Phoenix College student writers will be honored for their literary work as part of the Maricopa Community Colleges 2002-2003 Creative Writing Competition at an awards dinner on Friday, March 28.

The Creative Writing Competition, which is in its 13th year, provides students the opportunity to submit the best of their writing in the categories of poetry, short story, creative non-fiction or one act play. All category and placement winners will receive cash awards and their works will be published in Anthology, a creative writing book published annually by the Maricopa Center for Learning and Instruction (MCLI) and the Fine Arts Program. In addition, all first place winners will represent Maricopa Community Colleges at a national competition for writers sponsored by the League of Innovation.

The winners were selected among the 382 literary pieces submitted.

The Phoenix College recipients include:

Brandon Michalik – Poetry (Honorable Mention);
Jennifer Spray Doering – Creative Non-fiction (1st Place);
Robin Ferguson – Creative Non-fiction (Honorable Mention); and
John Merkel – Creative Non-fiction (Honorable Mention).
