Phoenix
College alum and 2001 Black Student Union (BSU) Living Legend recipient
is to be honored once again.
Calvin Goode, '47 has made
significant contributions toward preserving the states history and
will be recognized by the Historical League, Inc. as an Arizona Historymaker
on March 1 at the Marriotts Camelback Inn. He was selected for this
prestigious award among hundreds of nominations.
Although Goode may be best
known for his 22 years as a Phoenix City Councilman, he is also known
for his devotion and dedication to education. After attending Phoenix
College and graduating from Arizona State University in 1949, he went
on to pursue a career in accounting and public service.
In addition to his dedication
to education, this Historymaker also became heavily involved in
community affairs. He served as chairman of the Phoenix LEAP Commission
to improve education and job training opportunities and was known as the
"conscience of the council" while serving 12 terms on the Phoenix
City Council.
Today, Goode is working to
restore the old Carver High School to a place of pride in the community
as the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center, showcasing
the achievements of African-Americans in Phoenix and throughout Arizona.
As a "proponent of educational
excellence, counselor, champion of equal rights; longest serving member
of the Phoenix City Council and President of the George Washington Carver
Museum," Goode is most deserving of this award.
