Phoenix
College students Julia Carrillo and Pamela Pittman joined college presidents,
legislators and other dignitaries at a luncheon at Mesa Community College,
where they were honored for making the 2003 All-Arizona Academic Team.
This academic competition,
sponsored by Arizona Phi Theta Kappa, recognizes outstanding community
college students for their commitment to education and community service.
Both Carrillo and Pittman
are among an elite group of 61 students from 19 Arizona Community Colleges
to receive this honor.
Carrillo was recognized as
a first-team recipient and received a $1,000 scholarship. She is now eligible
for the All-USA Academic competition with finalists to be featured
in an upcoming issue of USA Today. Approximately 1,500 community
colleges nationwide nominate students for the national competition.
Making
the All Arizona Academic second-team, Pittman received a $750 scholarship.
In addition to their scholarship awards, the Arizona Board of Regents
honored both Carrillo and Pittman with a tuition waiver to an Arizona
university of their choice.
Both recipients are members
of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) at Phoenix College, a national scholastic honorary
organization for students attending two-year community colleges. Selection
was based on academic achievement, leadership accomplishments and service
to community.
