Valley Resident/Nationally Recognized Author To Receive American Association of Community Colleges 2005 Outstanding Alumni Award

(PHOENIX, Ariz., Dec. 14, 2004) - Phoenix College alumna and nationally recognized author, Stella Pope Duarte, will be among six individuals from around the country to receive the 2005 Outstanding Alumni Award from the American Association of Community Colleges during their annual convention in Boston on April 11.

The Outstanding Alumni Award is given annually to former students from community colleges who are making outstanding contributions in their chosen career fields and their communities. This prestigious award is highly regarded as one of the top awards in community college education for alumni. On that note, it is important to mention that more than 1,000 educators and community college officials across the country and from several other nations are expected to attend the awards recognition ceremony.

Although Duarte is most known for her literary work, the 1969 Phoenix College graduate has made a name for herself on the college campus. She has been a long-time volunteer and contributor to the Phoenix College Alumni Association. Additionally, she is a regularly scheduled speaker at various college events including the Alumni Storytellers event and the Hispanic language and culture workshop. As an alumni standout, Duarte was the first member of the Alumni Association to appear in college marketing materials and billboards. Duarte has been an avid supporter of the college and its mission.

Dr. Corina Gardea, President of Phoenix College, proudly nominated Duarte for this award.

"Phoenix College congratulates Stella Pope Duarte on this latest accolade and wishes her continued success," said President Gardea.

In addition to being a published author, Duarte also describes herself as a university professor, educational consultant, community advocate and motivational speaker. After the start of her literary career in 1995, Duarte has captured numerous awards and honors nationwide. Some have included a nomination for the Pushcart Prize in Literature, Excellence in Latino Arts & Culture Award and Barbara Deming Memorial Fund Award.

Duarte has also received two creative writing fellowships from the Arizona Commission on the Arts. The first was awarded in 1998 for Fragile Night, and the second was awarded in 2001 for Let Their Spirits Dance. Her work in progress, The Women of Juárez, recently won the Barbara Deming Memorial Fund Award.

She is truly a local, national and international success. Born and raised in La Sonorita barrio and as a graduate of the Phoenix Elementary School District and Phoenix Union High School District, she is a local product of success and an inspiration to many aspiring authors. Members of the Phoenix College community are extremely thankful for her undying commitment to the school and Alumni Association.
