(PHOENIX, Ariz., Dec. 16, 2004) - Associate Dean of Instruction, Wilbert Nelson recently accepted the Power of Partnership Award from the Maricopa County Attorney's Office for his work and undying dedication to the Victim Compensation Board.

Nelson has served on the board approximately nine years. This is the first time in 16 years that Maricopa County Attorney Rick Romley presented such an award. According to Nicole Pena from the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, Romley wanted to recognize those within the community that have made a significant impact on the community, as well as improved the quality of life for others.

The Victim Compensation Board assists victims financially and helps them get "back on their feet."

"I believe that we all have an obligation to help others with whatever talents we are given as individuals," said Nelson.

Nelson is a veteran educator, with years of experience in teaching at Phoenix College, Ottawa University and Arizona State University. In addition, for 14 years he has practiced in several health agencies including the Arizona State Department of Health, managing and directing various health initiatives and programs.

His service to the community goes beyond that of the Maricopa County Victim Compensation Board. Nelson has served as a member in the following organizations: City of Phoenix Human Services Committee, Arizona Bar Association, Maricopa County Area Agency on Aging, Arizona Sickle Cell Society, Maricopa County NAACP president, Arizona State Conference NAACP president, City of Phoenix Model Census Project, Valley Leadership Class VI alumni and MCBAA president. He continues to serve as education chair of the local NAACP and responds to requests to serve on various advisory committees.

The honoree also holds a master's in Social Work from Arizona State University, a bachelor's in Social Work from Texas A&M at Commerce and an associate's from El Centro Community College in Dallas.
