Math Department Chair To Participate in Joint Mathematics Meetings in January


(PHOENIX, Ariz., Dec. 10, 2003) – Phoenix College Math Department Chair and instructor, Dr. Cleopatria Martinez will participate in the annual Joint Mathematics Meetings of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) this January at the Phoenix Civic Plaza.

Dr. Martinez will be a panelist in a discussion on supporting the diverse personal lives of mathematicians, sponsored by the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM). The discussion will address challenges faced by mathematicians in the context of their personal lives.

More than 4,500 mathematicians are expected to attend the meetings. Other professional societies involved in the meetings include the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the Association for Women in Mathematics, the National Association of Mathematicians, and the Association of Symbolic Logic.

The Joint Mathematics Meetings are held for the purpose of advancing mathematical achievement, encouraging research and providing communication in the field. The meetings serve to preserve, supplement and utilize the research results of mathematicians worldwide.
