Phoenix College Celebrates the Holiday Season


(PHOENIX, Ariz., Dec. 4, 2003) – The holiday season is here and the Phoenix College community is filled with the spirit of sharing. From musical performances and art sales to festive displays and food drives, holiday cheer is quickly spreading across the campus.

Whether you feel like making a donation or listening to the delightful sounds of the McConnell singers, there is something for everyone.

 

Food & Clothing Drives

Food Drive for Society of St. Vincent de Paul

Requested items include non-perishable foods, kids diapers, gently used clothing for adults and kids, men’s white socks, linens, pillows, pots/pans, kitchen and dishware, towels and underwear.

This year’s family consists of a mother with five children ages 18, 17, 15, 10 and 3. BSU provided the family with a complete Thanksgiving dinner and will make their Christmas/Kwanzaa delivery days before the holiday.

As a result of a student request, BSU adopted a Phoenix College student family for Christmas/Kwanzaa. Both the grandmother and the mother are Phoenix College students and the mother has a 9-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son. This project is being done in conjunction with the English Department.

BSU will be collecting items for women and children at the Sojourner Center, a safe haven from domestic violence.

The Student Life and Leadership Office is collecting items for Howard Bound, a nonprofit organization that provides assistance and transitional housing to homeless and low-income families with children. Items needed include canned goods, pasta, rice, toilet paper towels, children’s underwear, socks and diapers. Other clubs are assisting with this project. They include Future Teachers Club, Christian Club, International Club and M.E.Ch.A.

After receiving requests from students and families who are in need of Holiday dinners, the Counseling Department works in conjunction with the St. Mary’s Food Bank to provide assistance to those in need.

Peace Youth Christmas Project for Migrant Children

The Migrant Children Project provides children with an opportunity to "shop" for the parents and adults in their lives, using the gift items provided by the Applied Business Department. Some of the requested items include:

Men – socks, belts, new shoes, nail clippers and toiletries
Women – kitchen items, sewing items, purses, make-up and toiletries
General Needs – gift boxes, wrapping paper, clear tape and ribbon

Experience the magic of the holidays with the sounds of sing along songs and familiar choral pieces. The McConnell signers have performed in four Czech cities, Germany, Austria, England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. The chorus is under the direction of Dan Hooper, who has been performing on the piano since age five.

This is an exciting display of various artwork ranging from ceramics to jewelry. It showcases unique pieces made by Phoenix College students and instructors. So for all you art lovers out there…come ready to make a purchase for the holidays.

The Phoenix College community will light up the night with illuminating candles to celebrate an ancient Mexican tradition – Las Posadas. This tradition commemorates the historical journey made by Mary and Joseph from Nazareth to Bethlehem in search of lodging many years ago.
