November 3, 2005

Dome Room, 1:00 pm

The direction of Federal Indian policy historically has swung wildly from policies intended to strengthen tribal government and culture to policies attempting to destroy tribal government and culture. The past 40 years have seen the creation of a broad political consensus that Indian tribes are here to stay. If the Indians' long battle for survival is indeed won, how should policy change
for the future?

Kevin Gover is a Professor of Law and an Affiliate Professor of American Indian Studies at Arizona State University. He served as Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Indian Affairs under Interior Secretary Bruce Babbitt from 1997-2001. While serving in this capacity he concentrated on upgrading Indian law enforcement, rebuilding Indian schools, reforming trust services and overhauling the Bureau of Indian Affairs management system. His eloquent apology to the nation's Indian Communities on the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the Bureau's founding won him wide approval in Indian country and Congressional praise.

Transforming Oral History into the Written Word - Creative Writing Workshop with Juli Henshaw
November 5

Willo Room, 9 a.m. - noon
602.285.7347 - Free Admission

Personal histories have been preserved through time, through photos and in the oral tradition of storytelling. Think of your family or a long-term friendship. Each has at least one orator (often more) and one keeper of this shared history. It is this orator that recounts the same event(s) at each new meeting or gathering, always bringing us to laughter or tears. This workshop will attempt to define the oral tradition of storytelling and contrast it to the written. Participants will briefly examine the similarities and differences of each. Come
prepared to share a brief story from your personal history in the oral tradition that you would like to record in writing. Be prepared to write.

Juli Henshaw, a fiction writer, received her MFA in Creative Writing from Goddard College. She has given previous workshops for the Phoenix College Creative Writing Program as well as writing workshops at Changing Hands Bookstore in Tempe. Her most recent publication is forthcoming in The Hawaii Review. She is currently at work on a novel.
