(PHOENIX, Ariz., Aug. 20, 2003) – If you suffer from stress or tend to take everything too seriously, Phoenix College has a class for you.

For those of you who have forgotten how to laugh, Phoenix College invites you to explore the world of humor this Fall in Contemporary Issues: Humor & Play. Back by popular demand this class is designed to provide students with the latest research on the health benefits of humor, laughter and play.

"This class teaches students that they can take their life seriously, but still take themselves lightly," said instructor, Ellie Marek. "In times of crisis, people often need to know that it is ok to laugh. The truth is we need laughter and are searching for it more than ever."

Marek, a nationally recognized speaker and writer, focuses on the power of humor for enriching both work and family life. Her message to students is always based on reality – bringing her own life experience to all of her work. Marek’s humor has evolved as a survival technique, which grew from her years as a single working mother and her 20 years as a professional counselor and trainer. She has reached thousands of people nationally and overseas with her message: "Take time to eat the roses."

Her class will explore the nature and nurturing aspects of humor and will also examine the various ways to balance work and play to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Contemporary Issues: Humor & Play will provide students with tools that promote healthy living and overall wellness. In addition to learning the latest research on the health benefits of humor, laughter and play, students will also view the classic film clips of the world’s greatest comedians.

"Laughter is healthy and good for you, as well as necessary for survival," added Marek. "It’s a great natural resource that so many people forget that they have."
