ESL Recognition Ceremony set for May 13

Submitted By:

Jeff Eldot, ESL faculty

(Phoenix, Ariz., May 4, 2004) - They come from more than 131 cultures worldwide. Their hopes, dreams and aspirations hinge on their ability to communicate in English. That’s why more than 400 students at Phoenix College are enrolled in English as a Second Language (ESL) classes.

At 7 p.m., on Thursday, May 13 in the Bulpitt Auditorium on the Phoenix College campus these students will be recognized in a ceremony that applauds and celebrates their success and mastery of the English language.

"Phoenix College is a great place to study English because of the variety of classes and broad range of times the classes are offered," said Mavis Encinas, ESL student from Mexico. "They have classes in grammar, reading and listening and speaking that have helped me progress in my job and my understanding of American culture. Most importantly, the instructors have helped me learn and understand English. They are very patient and available when you need them."

Phoenix College’s ESL program offers a culturally diverse student population and effective learning environment. The ESL program is comprehensive and accessible with respect to assessment, placement and instruction based on shared competencies designed to assist students in achieving their academic, occupational and personal goals.

"The journey to learn English and understand U.S. culture is a difficult one," said Dr. Joseph Kimbuende, Phoenix College ESL Growth Coordinator/instructor. "We help our students reach their goals by providing cogent instruction, advisement and tutoring whether it’s work, continuing education or personal enrichment."

Register now for Summer ESL classes! Summer classes begin June 7. For more information, please call (602) 285-7800 or visit the web site at www.phoenixcollege.edu.
