The awning on the 2nd floor of the H Building collapsed earlier this afternoon. There are no injuries. Our Public Safety department responded quickly to make sure that the building was cleared. Students, faculty, and staff are safe and accounted for.
The Fire Department has been on scene to assess the damage. We will have construction fences surrounding the area to keep everyone at a safe distance. We are working to relocate classes and notify students while doing everything possible to make sure no class sessions are missed.
The H building houses the Communication/Reading/American Sign Language Department and the Education Department, with faculty offices housed on the second floor. These offices also will be relocated.
The building was constructed in the early 1950s and renovated in the 2000s. The portion that fell was part of the renovation. The college is bringing in a forensic structural engineer to consult.
For more information about the relocation of classes, check your Student Center. You should have a message regarding the class location change. You can also contact the Enrollment Center at 602.285.7500.
