Fire Science Program Information

Our courses will help a prospective firefighter develop interview skills, create a resume, and learn introductory firefighting and emergency response skills.  Physical conditioning classes are geared to prepare for the demands of the testing process and the fire academy.

Promotional Courses
In addition to the opportunities completion of your degree will offer, Phoenix College has specific courses for firefighters wishing to move up the career ladder.  Promotional courses include training in:

  • Fire hydraulics and apparatus
  • Supervisory practices
  • Personnel management
  • Firefighting tactics and strategies

Many of our courses are held at the Phoenix Fire Department Training Academy and are taught by current fire department members.  Get more information from one of our faculty or sign up for a course today!

Fire Operations Academy

Phoenix College has partnered with Paradise Valley Community College and the Phoenix Fire Department to offer a Firefighter Operations Academy.  This is a very challenging and exciting course qualifying you for the Certificate of Completion in Firefighter Operations.  Successful completers qualify to test for International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) Firefighter I&II certification through the State of Arizona Fire Marshal’s Office.

Academy prerequisites include EMT104 EMT-basic, FSC105 Hazardous Materials First Responder, and a CPAT within 6 months.  Additionally, FSC134 Fitness and Conditioning for Firefighters is a co-requisite.

Interviews for acceptance into the Academy are typically held in July for the fall semester and December for the spring semester.  Make sure to get your interest form in on time.

Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)

Since acceptance of the CPAT by the fire service in 1999 as a baseline entrance standard, most Arizona fire departments require it.  Phoenix College offers CPAT testing through the FSC130 CPAT course and separately twice in each spring and fall semester.  Additional CPAT testing is done throughout the year on an as-needed basis.  Please call the Fire Science Office at 602-285-7526 for dates and fees.
See all the CPAT offerings available through MCCCD.
