MEDICAL CODING - PHYSICIAN BASED CERTIFICATE PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Medical Coding -Physician-Based Program is designed to prepare individuals for diagnostic and procedural coding positions in physician-based service settings such as clinics, physician offices, managed care organizations and surgical centers. The Certificate Program includes theoretical and laboratory instruction on the Phoenix College campus as well as a professional practice affiliation in an area health care setting.

EMPLOYMENT

Although certification is provided by professional organizations unrelated to this Program, this curriculum will providethe strong theoretical foundation needed for it. Entry salaries up to 12/hr based on qualifications and prior health related experience.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Work in physician-based coding may require physical activities including, but not limited to: retrieval of patient and billing records, transporting records, continuous computer data entry and extended periods of sitting. There is also some limited lifting of the records themselves.

ADMISSION CRITERIA

  • High School Diploma or GED or Equivelent
  • English asssessment reflecting the eligability for ENG 101: First Year Composition or Eng 107 First Year Composition for ESL or permission of Prograam Director.

FOR YOUR INFORMATION...

  • Enrollment is on a FIRST COME FIRST SERVE basis.
  • Courses may be available during the day and evening hours. Part-time enrollment is possible.
  • Advanced placement is available depending on documentation of experience or prior education. See Program Director.
  • Some Program courses are offered only one semester a year. Advisement for sequencing is important.
