      ANY OR ALL OF THE THREE EKG COURSES ARE AVAILABLE TO HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS WHO MIGHT WANT TO IMPROVE THEIR SKILLS AND MARKETABILITY. NO ADVISEMENT OR SIGNATURE IS NECESSARY IF YOU ARE TAKING ONLY ONE OR TWO OF THE COURSES.

 

 

Introductory Letter

Dear Prospective Student:

Thank you for your inquiry about the Electrocardiography/Telemetry Program at Phoenix College. This program is only offered once a semester and the starting date for the next program will be January 18, 1999. The prerequisite core courses are offered through the summer as well as in the fall.

The Electrocardiography Program is 10.5 credits involving twelve classes. (see enclosed flyer) In addition, there are 80 hours of clinical experience necessary to complete the certificate program; these clinical hours need to be scheduled in the early mornings. There is a choice of several hospitals from which you can choose to do your practicum. All decisions concerning clinical experience/practicum will be made by your Program Director based on your schedule.

Certificate of Completion in EKG/Telemetry Technician

10 Credits (Major Code: 5664)

The EKG/Telemetry Technician curriculum is designed to provide students with the educational and technical skills required to perform routine EKGs and other non-invasive cardiac tests such as holter monitoring and continuous cardiac monitoring.

The prerequisite/ co-requisite for the program is certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).  Placement tests are recommended if a student has no previous college experience in English or reading classes.

EKG Course Schedule

HCE140 EKG and Arrhythmias

Comprehensive overview of cardiac anatomy and physiology including coronary artery function and basic cardiac health and disease.   Identification of cardiac arrhythmias using IKG wave form, measurement and relationship to cardiac activity, cardiac electrical and conductive systems.   Comparative survey of variations and instrumentation of IKG use in cardiac specialties.  Prerequisites: None.

HCE141  Practicum:  Basic Cardiovascular Skills

Practice basic procedures and patient interaction in a clinical setting, Introduction to Manual IKD, Computer IKG, Holter monitor, pacemakers, and treadmill.   Prerequisites or Corequisites: HCE140, or permission of program coordinator.
