How long is the Medical Assisting program?


The program does not follow the traditional semester. Students attend classes all day Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for nine months. This includes two externships; one is in phlebotomy where we will place you in an outpatient lab; the second is the medical assisting externship where we will place you in a physician's office or a healthcare organization.

Where can I do my externship for the Patient Care Technician program?


Phoenix College has contracts with most of the Valley hospitals. The clinical coordinator will meet with you and discuss which hospital might be the best fit for you.

Will the phlebotomy program allow me to be licensed as a phlebotomist?


There is no licensure for phlebotomist in the state of Arizona. When you successfully complete the program, you are eligible to sit for one of the many national exams offered by many different agencies. See "Certification Information".

What do I do if I cannot find my immunization records?


A Health Declaration Form must be completed and signed by your health practitioner before you will be eligible to register for phlebotomy courses. If you are unable to find your records, you may choose between having the immunizations redone or have titers drawn for proof of immunity. See "Health Declaration Form".

What is the cost of the phlebotomy program?


The total cost of the complete program is less than $600.00. If you have already completed the prerequisites, the cost will be less than $400.00. For complete breakdown see "Program Cost".

Do I have to take the HCC courses to enter the phlebotomy program?


Not necessarily. Persons who have a degree in health care related fields are exempt. Other licensed or certified health professionals may be exempt based on your health care background and with permission of the Program Director. The prerequisites for the phlebotomy skills set are: HCC 130 Fundamentals in Health Care Delivery 3.0 credits HCC 145AA Medical Term for Health Care Workers I 1.0 credit The pre-requisite core courses (HCC) are offered at all the colleges throughout the semester both in the classroom and on the Internet.

Is there a waiting list for the phlebotomy program?


No "waiting list" is used for the phlebotomy program. If the courses are filled when you decide to register, you should go to the Advisement Center and find out what prerequisites are necessary to have in place so that you can be prepared to register should a place become available. Check the website often for withdrawals and especially after "purge for lack of payment" dates.
