Registration & Advisement Information

Students are responsible for selecting the proper courses for their program of study and ensuring they have satisfied all course prerequisites needed to register for any course. Please refer to the Phoenix College catalog if you are unsure of the proper courses or the prerequisites. You can also consult with a Legal Studies Program Advisor. The catalog is the definitive authority. Please refer to "How to Use Your Catalog" in the Phoenix Colege Catalog

Waiver of Prerequisites. Only the Program Director or Legal Studies Department Chair can waive a prerequisite. Program Advisors and instructors cannot waive prerequisites. Any waiver must be authorized in writing, on the required form, signed by the Program Director or Department Chair, and on file in Advisement before it is effective. Students enrolled in courses without the prerequisites or an approved waiver on file will be administratively withdrawn from the course.

Course Substitutions. A course substitution is when a student wants to have a course other than the one required in the Phoenix College Legal Assisting program count toward their degree or certificate. This includes transferring of coursework from other schools or substituting a different class taken at Phoenix College for the course required in the program of study.

Because course substitutions are a deviation from the prescribed program of study outlined in the Phoenix College catalog, all course substitutions must be approved by the Program Director, Department Chair, AND the Dean of Instruction. Program Advisors and instructors cannot authorize course substitutions.

Any course substitution must be authorized in writing, on the required form, signed by the Program Director, Department Chair, AND the Dean of Instruction and must be on file with the student's permanent records before it is effective.

A maximum of 15 credits are eligible for transfer to satisfy LAS program requirments. No course will be considered for transfer unless it was taken at a regionally accredited school. Legal specialty courses must have been taken at an ABA-approved program within eight years of the date of requesting its substitution. All course substitutions are subject to review and approval by the Program Director, Department Chair, and the Dean of Instructor.

Submitting Waiver/Substitution Requests. Do not send any paperwork to the Legal Studies Department, its faculty, or staff. All waiver and course substitution requests must be submitted to the Legal Studies Program Advisor, who can assist the student in determining what supporting documentation may be required. At a minimum, students will need unofficial copies of their transcripts and copies of the course descriptions for the courses they wish evaluated. Students must also have an OFFICIAL transcript sent directly from the other school to Phoenix College Records and Registration. It is the student's responsibility to secure the paperwork. Appointments can be made with the Program Advisor by calling 602-285-7833.

In addition, students may need to provide a course outline, list of objectives, or competencies for the course they want evaluated. The more information the student can provide, the quicker the evaluation can be made. It is the student's responsibility to secure the paperwork.

Because every student's situation is unique and because we want to make the most accurate determination possible, we cannot make any evaluation or offer any opinion on substitution until all required paperwork has been received and evaluated.

Students will be notified in writing when their request has been reviewed and whether their request was approved.
