When Delane Oscarson was a senior at Chaparral High School in Scottsdale, she had a tough decision to make. With four community colleges within 30 minutes of her home, which one should she choose.

The choice it turned out was not that difficult at all.

"My sister played softball at Phoenix College and really loved it here," said Oscarson. "She also told me they had a great coaching staff.

Oscarson, the Bear's starting leftfielder, is currently the team's batting leader with a .435 average. Her lofty hitting has not come easy.

"When I first got to Phoenix, I really didn't trust my abilities," said Oscarson. "But, the coaching staff made me more confident and made me become more aggressive at the plate."

To go along with her outstanding ability at the plate, she is equally adept in the classroom, carrying a 3.7 grade point average as an Education major.

NCAA Division 1 programs, such as Coastal Carolina University and Tulsa are vying for her services next season.

Oscarson said the team has two main goals this season - one on the the field and the other off. On the field, the team wants to win its third National Championship of the decade. This season's road to the title will be a bit tough than in recent years as this squad must go through Iowa. The finals in the previous title runs have been right here in Phoenix. Off the field, the team is striving for a 3.5 team grade point average.

Both are very lofty goals, but you have to set the academic and athletic bar high as Head Coach Heinz Mueller wouldn't have it any other way.
